Chico Buarque 50 Anos: A Celebration of Brazil's Legendary Singer-Songwriter
Chico Buarque is one of the most influential and beloved artists in Brazilian music history. His songs combine poetic lyrics, social commentary, and musical diversity, ranging from bossa nova to samba, from folk to rock. He has also written novels, plays, and musicals, and has been a vocal critic of authoritarian regimes and social injustice.
In 1994, to commemorate his 50th birthday, Universal Portugal released a 5CD box set titled Chico Buarque 50 Anos, featuring 75 songs selected by the artist himself. The box set was divided into five thematic albums: O Trovador (The Troubadour), O Politico (The Politician), O Amante (The Lover), O Malandro (The Rascal), and O Cronista (The Chronicler). Each album showcases a different facet of Buarque's musical persona and career, from his romantic ballads to his political anthems, from his humorous sketches to his literary adaptations.
The box set is a rare and valuable item for fans and collectors of Brazilian music, as it contains some of Buarque's most famous and acclaimed songs, as well as some lesser-known gems and collaborations. Some of the highlights include:
A Banda, his first hit from 1966, a cheerful march that celebrates the joy of music and life.
ConstruÃÃo, a masterpiece of wordplay and social critique from 1971, inspired by the death of a construction worker.

Chico Buarque was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1944, into a family of intellectuals and artists. His father was a historian and journalist, and his mother was a pianist and painter. He grew up surrounded by music and literature, and developed a passion for both. He started writing songs at an early age, influenced by the bossa nova movement and the samba tradition. He also studied architecture at the University of SÃo Paulo, but dropped out to pursue his musical career.
In 1966, he participated in a music festival with his song A Banda, which won the popular vote and launched him to fame. He soon became one of the leading figures of the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) genre, along with other artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, and Tom Jobim. He also became involved in the cultural resistance against the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985, writing songs that denounced censorship, oppression, and violence. Some of his songs were banned or altered by the authorities, and he had to use pseudonyms or record them abroad. He also faced harassment and threats from the regime, and went into exile in Italy for a year in 1969.
Despite the difficulties, Buarque continued to produce remarkable and innovative music throughout the 1970s and 1980s, exploring different styles and themes, and collaborating with other artists from Brazil and abroad. He also expanded his artistic horizons, writing plays, musicals, novels, and poems. Some of his works were adapted to cinema and television, such as Ãpera do Malandro (The Opera of the Rascal), Estorvo (Turbulence), and Budapeste (Budapest). He won several awards and honors for his contributions to Brazilian culture, such as the Camões Prize, the Jabuti Prize, and the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Today, Chico Buarque is still active and respected as one of the greatest artists of Brazil. He has released more than 40 albums, sold more than 10 million copies, and performed in hundreds of concerts around the world. He has also written six novels, two of which were translated into English: Turbulence and Spilt Milk. He is admired by generations of fans and musicians, who recognize his talent, creativity, and commitment to social justice. He is a national treasure and a universal artist. ec8f644aee
